Hello from our English Corner

Hello Everyone,  I am one of the two moderators/caretakers of the English Corner at the  Treasure Island  英语角, section II of Section II of Rainlane BBS http://www.rainlane.com  Four months ago I was drafted, quite by accident, into becoming one of their caretakers when 3 out of 4 of their existing moderators had to leave. Their traffic was also falling off precipituously. I consider myself only as an Interim Moderator-- on the job only until things return to normal.   Since English Corner sites are not commerical sites I think my mentioning about our site here does not contravene any regulation you may have about commercial advertising.  We are a very tiny English Corner. However, each English Corner has its own unique features and so have we.  For those who like quizzes, we have been running a series of quizzes on idioms, proverbs, grammar and translation based on comics strips and or pictures.   There is also an in depth review on Jan Wong and her book "Red China Blues神州怨" ." I was told this book is not available in China.   For music fans, there is an in depth investigation into the mystery of Mahler's "Songs of the Earth  大地之歌之謎" -- a song symphony based on Tang Poems. The mystery is that there are two unidentified poems in the 6 songs.  For poetry lovers, there is a long expose on the Persian Poet :Omar Khayyam--excerpts, pictures ,short biography, anecdote by the author, and a few Chinese translations.  For creative writers, we have two "Unending stories" by relay writing. 英文接龍故事. The current one is called the "African Adventure" and have 4 different branches all of which you can contribute segments to. An order story called "Shanghai 1932" is in a state of suspended animation since almost all the members are unfamiliar with the background at that period of time. However, these are just made-up stories and not supposed to be historically accurate.  Among other items of interest are xiao-xiaos funny and illuminating "Xiao-xiao's language lab" in zip file, a continuing collection of "odd and unusual English words, phrases and expressions, completebr with explanations and examples" and the usual collectionn of on-line resources and references to learning English sites and tools.  Consider this as a personal invitation to you from me. When you have the spare time, come by and pay us a visit. Thanks.  The Yeti.

well, though it is a ad. your forum's ideals are particularly revealing and helpful to the construction of this forum, we may adopt some of them someday :-)

Looks like it has been two years since I left that message. I have been trying to get back here but could not find my passoword. I tried that 'ask for your passwork" function and that didn't work either--kept on telling me I have the wrong combination.  After a while, I gave up.
Today, on a hunch, I tried another combination and it worked.

Much have changed since I left that message two years ago.
The English Corner is now 4 boards instead of 1. It is still a non-commercial, non-school related board; runs no ads, sells nothing. So this is not a "commercial advetizement", but rather, a "community announcement", as I would like to call it.
The four boards are:
  Learning Exchange http://www.rainlane.com/list.asp?boardid=11
  Community Center http://www.rainlane.com/list.asp?boardid=27
  Featured Articles  http://www.rainlane.com/list.asp?boardid=26
  Writing and Translation workshop http://www.rainlane.com/list.asp?boardid=8

For those of you who routinely collect website for those massive "web site recommendation" lists, please check us out, and if you find us worthy, include us in your list.

Once again, let me say that we are not school related. We do not follow the format of those "massive resources download" type of boards. We also try to write or compile our own material. Of course, a BBS being an open forum, there is no way in preventing people to bring in material that have been post a hundred times before in other forums.
